In recognition of Women's Equality Day, the Portrait Gallery and its Smithsonian colleagues revisit the pan-institutional series "Women of Color: Power of Protest." Inspired in part by historian Kate Clarke Lemay's recent Portrait Gallery exhibition "Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence," the Nov. 2019 "Ain't I a Woman: Activism, Legacy and Our Quest for Justice" panel paid tribute to Black women crusaders who confronted societal challenges, political obstacles and racism not only during the suffrage movement, but throughout history. In case you missed it, you can now access this program and the two others in the series online, just in time for Women's Equality Day. This series and online program are supported by the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative, #BecauseOfHerStory.
